Family History Skills – Evening Course – Stage 1

Description

Take the next step in your family history journey. Actually, 12 steps. Treat yourself to some dedicated time each Thursday evening by joining us on our 12-week Family History Skills course. Starting in September, on Zoom, learn about the essential records and find out how the important databases and archives work.

Were you one of many people to discover your family history and your family’s stories during lockdown? So many of us entertained ourselves by searching online, maybe finding our great-grandparents, often finding new cousins in other countries, using DNA tests to identify a wider family tree. And, if we’re honest, we found out that being online and having our DNA results meant we needed to have more family history skills.

Every Thursday evening, from 16 September to 2 December, join us on Zoom for a 2-hour class. You may have found the civil registrations, the censuses, the parish records. Now you can learn how to assess the records and what to do when you can’t find an ancestor. Explore newspapers, The National Archive and oral histories, with tutors who have expert knowledge. Unravel some of the complications when you search for wills, military records and documents with old handwriting.

This 12-week course is dedicated to anyone that wants to be better at building their family tree. It aims to help you use the records, both onsite and online, to find your ancestors – wherever you are in the world. There are no specific requirements or special knowledge needed. Over the weeks, you’ll get to know the other participants, all with similar interests. The tutors always make time for Q&A sessions so ask your questions and get full value. Unmute yourself during the short break and chat with everyone.

If you are thinking of becoming a Genealogist, this course is a perfect foundation.

Each class runs from 6 to 8/8.30 pm and includes a short break and a Q&A session. All classes will be recorded and made available to anyone who books a place. Bookings accepted through 23 September.

Tutors: Else Churchill, John Hanson, Caroline Gurney, Simon Fowler, Antony Marr and Alec Tritton.
