Swiss Cottage – an Illustrated History

Description

In this talk Tudor Allen describes the history and development of Swiss Cottage.

Tudor describes the area 200 years ago, when it was all fields with the River Tyburn running through it. He shows how its development began with the construction of the Finchley Road in the late 1820s, and how many notable buildings and institutions have enriched life there – from the Swiss Cottage tavern to Cosmo’s Restaurant.

Come along and also find out a little about some of Swiss Cottage’s famous ex-residents, including Sigmund Freud, T S Eliot and Lillie Langtry.

About the speaker: Tudor Allen is the Senior Officer of Archives at the Camden Local Studies and Archives Centre and borough archivist.

The archive which contains over 200,000 items, records the people, places and events in the history of the area today comprising the London Borough of Camden - the former boroughs of Hampstead, Holborn and St Pancras.
