Were your Ancestors Gypsies?

Beverley Walker discusses the migration of Gypsies from India and describes their history in Britain.

She gives us a look at their lifestyle, including tents, caravans, travel and language. She offers examples of typical names and tells us about the occupations they frequently undertook.

Beverley introduces us to sources you can use to research Romany and other Traveller families, including Fairground, Circus and Canal People. To illustrate the research we can do, she shows us examples of documents that she has found relating to her family, and other families, in various parts of Britain.

About the speaker:  Beverley Walker is the Chair of the Romany & Traveller FHS and has been a Member of their committee since 2002.  She has been researching her family since 1985 and has an Extra Mural Diploma in Genealogy and History of the Family (University of London).  Beverley has worked as a Heir Hunter for three years with a London based Probate Research Company.
