Tracing Your Female Ancestors

Family historians are often accused of interesting themselves only in the male lines of their ancestry, following the history of the surname. Older pedigree compilations often ignore the daughters of a family leaving it difficult to establish the distaff line.

In this 5-week course you will find out about the sources that you can use to throw more light on the lives of your ancestresses and hear their voices.

What will the course cover?

  • Women’s voices and lives
  • Using mtDNA to trace the maternal line
  • Use of autosomal DNA testing
  • Beyond the newspaper reports of women criminals
  • Occupations inside and outside the home
  • Real-life case studies
  • Guides to archival and online sources
