The Parliamentary Archives hold the historic records of the House of Commons and House of Lords, from 1497 to present day, stored in the Victoria Tower, Palace of Westminster.   Come and see behind the scenes at the Parliamentary Archives: a one hour-long tour taking place in the Victoria Tower, comprising a visit to the Well and the opportunity to see one of the strongrooms and view some original documents from their collections. 


You must be physically fit to attend this tour as there are a lot of stairs, please see information below.

For security reasons all attendees must carry photographic ID (e.g. passport, driving licence) otherwise admittance will be refused.

Westminster (5 minute walk). Jubilee, Circle and District lines

  • St James Park (10 minute walk). Circle and District lines
  • Victoria (15 minute walk). Victoria, Circle and District lines
  • Charing Cross (15 minute walk). Bakerloo and Northern lines


A large number of buses stop on Parliament Square, Abingdon Street, Whitehall and Westminster Bridge. All are under 10 minutes walk to the Archives.

There are good bus and tube connections between these stations and Westminster Station.

Visitors have to queue to go through security searches on entrance to the Palace of Westminster. We therefore advise you to arrive 15 minutes early to ensure the tour can commence at the agreed time.


For safety and security reasons, visitors must follow any instructions given by Parliamentary Archives or security staff while on the premises. Our staff reserve the right to refuse access to the Victoria Tower at any point if it is felt that the health and safety of the visitor, other visitors or staff would be compromised. Please note the following:

• Please do not travel to visit if you are experiencing any symptoms of Covid, flu or other respiratory infections. Contact us to cancel or re-arrange the tour if necessary.

• Use of stairs. All visitors must be physically capable of ascending and descending spiral staircase steps independently (unsupported by walking aids). This is an essential requirement to enable evacuation in the event of a fire alarm or an emergency. Visitors should make use of handrails on the staircases at all times.

• Footwear. Sensible footwear must be worn. Flat shoes are advised due to the nature of the flooring in some areas, including the spiral stairs.

• Lifts. Visits may potentially involve the use of two small lifts. Please let us know in advance if this is likely to cause a problem for you.

• Temperature. Air conditioning is maintained throughout the Victoria Tower. You will not be able to wear outdoor coats in the Tower but you may wish to wear an extra layer for warmth.
