Sex, Violence and Alcohol: Some Hidden After-effects of the Great War

Join Dr. Frances Hurd as she explores the topic of post-traumatic stress disorder comparing three case studies from the First World War with three from the charity Combat Stress.

Some men returned home with no medical diagnosis of mental distress, but they and their families faced years of suffering. This affected more of our family members than we realise. Come along to this fascinating talk to learn more and bring your questions with you.

About the speaker: Dr Frances Hurd has a PhD in medieval and modern history, and has worked in publishing, academia and heritage. She is now an historical researcher exploring the lives of ten families before, during and after the First World War.

She makes extensive use of family history investigation in her own research, and also undertakes projects for clients, focusing on placing their relatives in the context of their times.
