Lunchtime chat: How Our Ancestors Saw The World

Mick Henry is in our virtual SoG common room ready for a chat. So grab a sandwich and a cup of tea and sit down with us.

Our lunchtime chats are friendly and relaxed. Mick tells us about villages depicted in early colour prints published by Abraham Le Blond. He used the work of Anthony John Puller to produce a series of affordable colour prints in oval shape in the 1850’s depicting village scenes like The Peddler, Soldiers Return, The Image Boy, Snowballing etc, and they were one of the first colour prints which anyone could afford using  a process devised by George Baxter.

Then it’s your turn to talk. Take part in a discussion about the images your ancestors saw. Come prepared to tell us about paintings, photographs and scenes you know your ancestors viewed.

About the speaker: 

Mick Henry has been interested in family history for the past 50 years and on the Executive Committee of the Sussex Family History Group (SFHG)for over 40 years. He  was coordinator for Sussex of the great 1881 Census Index project that the Mormons financed. He  worked with Daniel Meadows and his team to produce a short piece that was broadcast one year after Who Do You Think You Are was broadcast on BBC 1. In 2015 after Colin Excell passed away he became Chairman of the SFHG
